ANNUAL MEETING

A growing sense of comradeship with the Y.W.C.A. organisations of other countries and. a feeling of actual participation in the whole movement, particularly in England, China and Egypt, was revealed in the report of the Palmerston North Y.W.C.A.. which was presented at the annual meeting last evening. Mr A. A. Langley presided over a good attendance, and associated with him were Mrs C. A. Small, president of the 1 .AY.C.A. Board. Miss Alary Greemvell, newly-appointed general secretary, and Miss V. Hirons, actingsecretary'. Shoulder sprays were presented by Misses I). Lungridgc, R. Robinson and E. Barsanti. club leaders, to the three ladies. Telegrams of good wishes were received from Miss M. Jones (former secretary), Miss Jean Campbell (girls’ work secretary), and the Timaru and Dunedin Associations. . On the motion of Mrs W. .T. Phillips, the report was adopted. Mrs K. Dean, in the absence ol the treasurer (Mrs R. Jamieson) read the balancesheet and moved its adoption, ■ stating that although the activities of the association had not decreased —rather had they increased—the finances were still in a healthy state and the balancesheet could thus he considered very satisfactory. The election of officers resulted: President, Airs Small; vicepresident. Mrs Dean; treasurer. Airs R Jamieson; lion, secretary. Miss J. P. Grigor; committee, Mesdames E. C. Barnett, D. Evans, P E. Flood. F. G. Major, AY. J. Phillips, G. G. Priest, A. E. Pearce, F. G. Jolly, J. Rainforth, A. Barsanti, B. Elohick. Misses M. Forrest. Grigor and B. Kelly; advisory board, Messrs A. A. Langlev, AV. G. Black, J. 0. Boniface, H. Christmas, A. Grigor, G. G. Priest and AV. E. AA’inks ; lion auditor, Mr A\ T . C. Harrington ; lion, solicitor, Mr L. Laurenson; representatives on the National Board. Mesdames Major and Flood. Mrs Small proposed a vote of thanks to Mr Langley for the work he had done for the association : they were under a great debt of gratitude to him, she said. She also thanked all who had helped, during the year, with a special vote of appreciation to Miss Hirons who had done splendid work during her term as secretary.

The annual report stated that in its 23ru year of existence the association had been privileged to send money to help restore huts that had been demolished during air raids in England and thus help the work that was being curried out, in centres where women were manufacturing munitions and implements and carrying out other war services. From China, Miss Moncricff had brought reports of the struggles and triumphs of the women of tin, Y.W.O.A.—the knowledge of the magnificent, heroic .spirits of these women had given diem an added interest and zest for the work, and desire for fellowship—also a great thankfulness for their own personal security. “We have a personal interest in the work of the Y W'.C.A. in Egypt, where in Cairo nurses, canteen workers. etc., are rested and entertained in hostel and rest rooms staffed by New Zealand Y.W.C.A. secretaries and helpers by the authority and at the expense of ’the New Zealand Government," the report added. Annual subscribers totalled 4S women members 94, senior clubs 60, Girl Citizens 28, Crippled Girls Club j and folk dancing class 32, making a total of 271 members. A review' was given of the activities of the Business and Professional Women's Round Table Club, the Lyceum Club 3Y9 Club, Girl Citizens. Crippled Girls’ Club, folk dancing class, Mothers Club world fellowship work, and war-time service Through the. work of the board of directors, the balance-sheet compared very favourably with that of last year Special efforts had realised £127, membership and donations £l9B, the McCarthy Trust £IOO and trie City Council grant £lO. lhe books showed a credit, balance of £75.
