COUNCILLOR’S REMARKS.

At the June meeting of the City Council the council went into committee at the request of the Mayor (Mr A. E. Hansford) who said the business would take “a few minutes.” and accordingly departmental heads and reporters withdrew from the mooting. After waiting a very lengthy time in the lobby outside the council chamber, and as the hour was growing late, the reporters returned to the room to gather their unfinished work ami do part. It so happened that their entry j coincided with tho completion of the council’s business in committee and Imdution of this was made by (Jr G Tremaine, who indicated his belief that it was possible for a person standing outside the doors of the chamber to hear what was said within. Any suggestion that tho reporters were doing, or would at any timo do, such an act was thereupon denied. At the meeting of the council, last night, Cr Tremaine said that he did not mean to say at tlm previous meeting that the reporters had been listening. The reporters appeared to think that their professional bearing had been questioned. Cr Tremaine said that such bearing of.-the reporters in Palmerston North was above reproach, and if any of the councillors bad thought in any way that he had been speaking of the conduct of the reporters he was sorry, for it cortainly had not been meant. The Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford) added lie was sure no reflection whatever on tho reporters had been meant.
