WOMEN’S PROBLEMS.

ADVISORY COUNCIL URGED

(Press Assn.) AUCKLAND, July 21. “J. should like to see an advisory council set up in the Dominion where women from all centres could discuss problems, particularly concerning women and children,” said Airs Dreavcr, tlie newly-elected member of Parliament for Waitcmata, in an interview. “This body should have direct contact with women members of Parliament to discuss social legislation. There is no problem facing any progressive Government that cannot best be solved by full consideration of the women’s point of view.” Air W. B. Darlow, who was second in the poll., said the by-election had demonstrated that an independent candidate bad little • chance of success against a party machine which had l>een in operation over a period of vears.

If. as is expected, there is a general election this year, Airs Af. AT. Dreavcr, who was elected on Saturday to fill the Waitcmata seat, will have only a few months in office before having again to go to the poll. The last member of Parliament to be elected in similar circumstances was. by a coincidence, al-o a woman. Airs E. R. Ate Combs was elected to represent Lyttelton at a by-election on July 24. 1935. She was re-elected at the general election on No\ember 27 tlie same year.
