The social welfare committee reported to the Palmerston North Hospital Board yesterday that during June 66 rations were issued to 10 cases in the whole of the board’s district. In Palmerston North 42 rations were j issued to seven cases. Electricity Restriction. An example of the manner in which the consumption of electricity is being kept in check was afforded in the report of the works committee to the City Council, hist evening. This stated that an application to increase the size of a water-heating element from 690 to 700 watts had been declined, authority being given for the installation ot one of 600 watts only. Damage to Shelters. Arising out of a tour of inspection of bus shelters which lie had made in company with the chairman of the transit committee (Cr D. F. Smillie), Mr H. J. Smith (traffic manager; report ed in detail to the City Council last; evening on the amount of wilful dam-j age done to bus shelters. Little ot the damage was accidental, he said, and the writings on the paintwork wore deliberate. Repair work to the extent of £SO was authorised by tlie council. Hospital Still Full. The medical superintendent (Mr J. H. North) reported to tlie Palmerston North Hospital Board yesterday that the Hospital again remained very full throughout the past month. The number of Territorials under treatment has fallen off with the reduction in the numbers at the local camps. A number of returned men are now undergoing treatment —both inpatient and outpatient. Patients remaining ill the Hospital at June SO numbered 267. and the daily average number of occupied beds was 240.13. Cycling on Footpaths. Cycling on the footpath at West End is at present receiving the attention of the traffic officers, stated a report presented to the City Council last evenino- by the traffic manager (Mr li. J. Smith'). The State housing area was causing trouble, lie stated, juveniles being the main offenders. Teachers Entering Camp. . At the meeting of the Wanganui Education Board yesterday a motion to the effect that teachers in the

board’s employment who were entering camp for overseas service be granted leave with pay for tlie period just prior

to their entry into camp was pro]>osed by Mr W. H. Brown and earned. Air Brown quoted tlie ease ol a teacher for whom the hoard had appealed for over a period of six months. The teacher was called on to enter camp and he asked the hoard to grant him

,a short period of leave before be went in so that lie could arrange his private affairs. His request had met with a blank refusal. Later, however; lie was granted two-days’ leave without pay. This was a scandalous state of affairs, and it was up to the hoard to do something aliout it, Mr Brown maintained.

Drainage of Lagoon. An echo of the May floods was heard at last evening’s meeting of the City Council, when the engineer (Air J. 11. Hughes) stated that the escape ot' the last of the water was retarded in several instances by private pipe drains being of inadequate size, and on his suggestion it was decided to serve no-tii-o on three property-owners (o have such pipes removed. Afr Hughes also reported on the Te Awe Awe Street culvert, built over 30 years ago, and on his recommendation a new one with a clear span of 15ft is to bo built at a cost of £800; improvements costing £IOO are also to be made to the Avenue Road culvert, and notice is to he served for the removal of an ornamental pond across a drain. Air A. J. Shailcr (who

previously sought monetary recompense) is to be informed that the council accepts no liability lor damage by the Hood, but the work in linnd will probably prevent a repetition of it.
