NEW PARADE GROUND

The first parade on the now ground at Johnston Park was Held on oauirday a.teinoon when the beiid.ng battalion ol the Home Guard engaged in lield-eraft exercises. Battalion Commander T. K. Hay addre-sod the men, itatmg that next month ammunition ior line exercises would be made available and that boots would be iortheoiiiing shortly. The town units would receive the first issue of boots. Impressed rifles, which are to be used, arc to be tested prior to the rilie exercises being undertaken. Telegraph and visual signalling exercises were hc-ld by the signal corps under the direction of the signals officer (.Air McLeod). The corps is equipped with field telephones and a miniature telephone exchange, and messages were transmitted by these methods. Alorse signalling by Hag was also practised and it is propose d to give members' of the corps instruction in lamp signalling at an early date. The importance of communications was stressed bv Suli-Area Commander C. B. McClure in a talk to officers of the Feilding unit on the recent manoeuvres at Tangimoana.
