The official account says that in June, 1941, the airman was first fitter of a Sunderland aircraft which in the course of operations was attacked by an enemy Foekwolte aircraft. After the engagement it was found the Sunderland was losing large quantities of oil. Griffin crawled on to a wing and discovered two large holes in the bottom of the oil tank.
