GIFT FROAI TEXAS. NEW YORK, July 20. The United States Government has asked the owners of American tankers j to transfer an additional 100 vessels to the British war effort. The Petroleum Co-ordinator (Air lekes) has call- . ed a conference at which it is expected that plans will he made for the transfer of the first 25. Air lekes has approved a plan to give Britain one day’s production of all the Texas oil wells. He said he believed the gift would amount to approximately 1,340,000 gallons. The Office of Production Management has tentatively ordered reductions to 50 per cent, in the production of automobiles, refrigerators and laundry machines in the interest of the defence programme for the coming year. Similar action is being taken in regard to other industries. The Washington correspondent of the New York Times reports that, according to a statement by Senator Downey to the Senate Alilitarv Committee. the economists of the Office of Production Management estimate that by April the United States will be outproducing Germany in warplanes and tanks. One thousand million dollars worth of military equipment is now being turned outviyul in the next two years this rut 4 w/l be tripled.
