OBITUARY.

MR JAMES HENRY CARSON

A well-known and respected citizen. Mr J. H. Carson, passed away at his residence, Queen Street, on July *J. Born in Wellington, Mr Carson came of fighting stock, for his father enlisted at the age of 20 in Belfast, Ireland, with the 57th Foot Regiment, and served in India, Corfu, the Crimea, and Malta. Mr Carson's mother accompanied her husband through all the vicissitudes of war, and indeed she was in the Crimea before Florence Nightingale and her band of nurses arrived. These she promptly joined soon after their arrival, and so husband and wife both rendered service to their country.

Mr Carson began work at an early age and later went to Auckland, where he married Miss W. P. S. Macky, of Glrig, Scotland. On returning to Wellington he was employed in a cordial factory, of which ho later became foreman. In 1902, with a family of five sons and one daughter, he and iiis wife came to Palmerston North, where Mr Carson commenced business as a cordial manufacturer. After 53 years of married life, Mrs Carson died in 1936. One son, Sydney Angus, died when only 12 years old, and two sons, John George, and James Henry, junr., died during the last Great War, the former of wounds received in France and the latter in Featherston camp during the pneumonic epidemic. The three surviving children are Mrs G. 1. M. Bell, Mr A. J. Carson (both of Palmerston North), and .Mr A. W. Cadson (England). An elder sister of the deceased, Mrs G. Oakes, is living in New Plymouth. There are also nine grandchildren and three great-grand-children.

Despite advancing years, Mr Carson took an active part, until within a few clays of his passing, iu the business of which he was the managing-director, and until a year or two of his death he had always enjoyed excellent health. He was a life memf>cr of the Cosmopolitan Club, a member of the Licensed Victuallers' Association, the Dominion Association of Cordial Manufacturers, Manawatu A. and P. Association, Employers' Association, Manawatu Trotting Club, Ashhurst-Pohangina Racing Club, an honorary member of the South African Veterans' Association, and a Past Chief Ranger of Court 3118, Wellington, Ancient Order.of Foresters. A large number of old friends and relatives attended the funeral to pay their last respects to the deceased. Rev. J. Hubbard conducted the services. The pall-bearors were Messrs D. Harkness, H. Carey, H. C. Howes, S. Lowthcr, K. Anderson, W. Dustin, C. Watkins, and R. Donald. The late Mr Carson will be greatly missed, for his kindly disposition, cheery words, and pleasant smile had won him a wide circle of friends, from whom were received many telegrams and messages of condolence and beautiful floral tributes.
