AIR FORCE RECRUITS

AVERAGE STANDARD GOOD Tlio average standard of candidates tor the Air Force is keeping up very well, according to Squadron-Leader A. C. McArtlmr, who is at present in Palmerston North as a member of the Air Force Selection Board, with Mr L. Lidgarcl. Squadron-Leader McArtlmr stated that over 90 applicants have been interviewed here this -week. Tlie group is a good one and the average' standard is keeping up very well. On Monday next the educational course for the city residents will begin and ior those in the country districts a correspondence course will start on the same date. "Our last tour, when we were accompanied by the Air Force Band," said Squadron-Leader McArtlmr, "was a recruiting campaign, and wo met with a great response. Well over 2000 men were selected throughout the Dominion. Pilots arc still required in great numbers, at least five being required for every gunner or observer. The board is "anxious to give the right type of men a chance to qualify as pilots, even if their secondary education is limited. With the educational course tlie men undertake before commencing training, the standard of mathematics is brought up to approximately the matriculation standard." The members of the board will be in Wanganui on Monday and later will visit Hawera and New Plymouth. This will complete their North Island tour and the board will later go to the South Island. i
