EFFECT OF FROSTS.

Judging by tjie experience of plumbers in Palmerston North, the hard frosts of several weeks ago found practically all the weak points in the water piping of private houses. On that occasion dozens of broken pipes were repaired, but yesterday very few, if any, were burst by the frost, which reached an intensity of 7.6 degrees. On the previous occasion one firm alone repaired at least 60 such fractures. The main trouble was with stop-taps near hot-water supply tanks between the cciliug and the roof of a number of residences, these taps being close to the* roof in each case. The taps were split by the ice forming inside them and water which was sprayed 'on to the upper sides of the ceilings in some eases did considerable damage.
