PRE-ELECTION BUDGET

NEARLY 70 MILLIONS FOR WAR The principal features in the Financial Statement presented to the House of Itepresentatives last night by the Minister of Finance (Mr Nash) are:— There will be no increase in taxation this year, despite a substantial increase in the provision for war expenditure, the total being 1 .£09,700,000. Of this amount the British Government will find £31,000,000 and the New Zealand Government £10,000,000 from loans. Social Security benefits arc to be extended, the total estimate being 1 £l-1,073,000. A National Development Loans Account is to be set up, covering what have hitherto been known as public works. The programme of such works this year calls for £20,615,000.

The estimated Consolidated Fund expenditure is £3 1 ,712,000, or about £1,000,000 less than last year’s total.
