_ Mr T. C. A. Hislop, Mayor of Wellington, has been selected as the National Party candidate for Wellington North, the seat at present held by Mr C. H. Chapman (Labour). Mr H. 0. Mellsop, of Kumeu, Auckland, and Mr J. W. F. Jones, of Pakaraka, Bay of Islands, were elected Dominion life-members at the annual conference of the Farmers' Union. Private advice has been received that Lieutenant J. A. Carroll, of Eketabuna, has been promoted captain after the Greek campaign, lie was ordered to report as an instructor at the Middle East Tactical School for Officers.

Mr Bichard Wilson Hawke, formerlj M.P. for Kaianoi, has died at his honu. in Christchurch, at the ago of 75 years. He was elected to the Ivaiapoi seat in 1928 as a member of the United Party, and held it until 1935. lie took a particular interest in the poultry industry. Bev. Tvor Hopkins, C.F.. of Timaru, previously reported missing,' was' one of the chaplains who remained with the New Zealand wounded in Crete. This information is contained in a letter to Mrs Hopkins from the Bishop of Waiapu, senior chaplain to the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. The two reappointed members, Hon. W. Perry and Hon. V. A. Ward, and the two new members, Hon. J. Cummings and Hon. It. Eddy, wore sworu in when the Legislative Council reassembled yesterday. Hon. T. F. O'Byrne and Hon. F. Waite, who wore also reappointed, were not present, tho latter being overseas. Notice has been received by Mr A. F. Moncur, M.P. for Botorua, who enlisted for overseas service shortly after the outbreak of war, to report in Wellington preparatory to entering camp. Mr Moncur has two sons on service, one a leading aircraftsman at Bongotai and another taking ia special course overseas.

Advice has been received by 'Senior-Sergeant A. G. McHugh, of Hamilton, that his son, Private M. J. McHugh, is missing. Private McHugh was amateur heavyweight boxing champion of New Zealand when he enlisted, and he won the Australian and New Zealand troop championship in Egypt. He was also au Auckland Ilugby representative.
