CITY BAND

Tho monthly meeting of the City Band committee was held on Monday evening, Mr E. AY. Low presiding over a good attendance. Expressions of regret were voiced at the death of Mr W. Devine, who had been a vicepresident of the band since its inception, members standing in silence lor a brief period ei.s a mark of respect. Messrs Low and Thomson were appointed to represent the band at the J annual meeting of the New Zealand Brass,Bands' Association. Air Thomson (conductor) reported that during the last month he tiad conducted 12 junior and six senior practices. The senior band had paraded with the Home Guard on two occasions and also luliillcd an engagement with the Manawatu Racing Club at. its winter meeting. The attendance on each occasion had been excellent and the playing all that could be desired. The band had been fortunate in securing the services of Mr L. Crane as drum-major. Mr Crane is a bandsman as well as an instructor in military drill, and although the band has only paraded under his direction on. two occasions the deportment of the band has considerably improved.
