WINTER FIXTURE OPENS. CONDITIONS IDEAL. With a track that provided good winter going the Wanganui Jockey Club opened its meeting to-day under ideal conditions at Awapuni. There was a very good attendance. TRAVAIL SPRINGS SURPRISE. There was a surprise in the Puma Hack Hurdles when Travail came on the seem' with a late run and raced away in the straight to win bv six lengths from Oorro borec, who was * the pacemaker almost throughout. Colibri was third and Regicide a poor fourth. The favourite, Manteau, ran a poor race. SANDY BAY STAYS ON. Beginning well from an outside position. Sandy Bay hung on long enough to beat the favourite Elusory by a head in the Maiden Race. Chef d’Ocuvro was a close third, but, the rent were wed strung out. The big field quickly straggled and many of the runners had their chances extinguished from the rise of the barrier. FOXIANA S SPLENDID FORM. Air L. H. Collinoon. president of the, Manawalu Racing Club, who won the Century Hurdles ltu>t year with Old Surrey, scored his second success in the event today when Foxiana gave a splendid exhibition of jumping and outclassed the field to score an easy win. He was tollowcd almost throughout by Great C)ucx, who headed him for a short distance between the five and six furlongs, but over the final stages Foxiana was easily in command. Limbohm was a fair distance hack third. Smoke Screen broke down five furlongs from home. MYARION WINS ON POST.

Mountain Fox looked all over a winner in the River Hack Handicap when Myarion, finishing with a great burst of speed, beat him by a nose. Ihe pacemaker, Koliika, was two lengths away with the favourite. Young Charles, fourth. Ihe winner appeared to he boxed in at tno turn for home, hut lattersall got him clear to ride a splendid finish. BRILLIANT STEEPLECHASER.

T. Tito completed the winning jumping double when lie rode Lady Caiiagnan to victory in the Wanganui ftteepiecnasc. the Alarton-trumed mare gave a brilliant exlnbition of jumping anu led all the way to win very easily. Ruling Star lnt one or two fences and did well to finish second. Kaiwuka was a poor third alter being handily placed throughout. At the penultimate lenco Gold Aut fell and Drought down Riotous, but neither had a chance al that stage. EXCITING CONTEST.

The favourite, the Alonaicli, registered a brilliant [Hulormance to win tlie l onnolly Handicap. He was well placed cany, but was crowded in going down the buck stretch and was still in a hud position wi ion tlie straight was reached. Some brilliant riding by Broughton, howctei, enabled him tu get up in time to beat Last Aero by a neck. Gay lox was only a head further away, with Trench Law at the head of a big bunch, it was an exciting race.
