OBITUARY.

MR JAMES NEWTH. The death occurred on Saturday last in | the Pa'.mcrston North Hospital of a highly esteemed resident of Koxton, Mr James Ncwth, of Hall Street, at the age of 84 years, after a compaiatively short illnces. Deceased's father, the late Mark Ncwth, was born at Devizes, Wiltshire, England, and came to this Dominion in the sailing ship Lloyds, arriving at Nelson in 1842. Deceased's mother, Harriet, Norris, also arrived in the sailing ship Bolton in the same year, being a native of Selborne, Oxfordshire, England. The ,late Mr James Ncw'.h was born at Waitnca West, Nelson, and after his early schooling, engaged in farm work until 1888. when he married and removed to Westport. He came to Koxton in 1891 and took up work in the flax industry, later carrying on the occupation of dairyman and also market gardener. About 26 years ago Mr and Mrs Ncwth took up their residence in Hall Street, where they resided together until the late Mr Newth entered the Palmerston North Hospital a few days prior to his death. The late Mr Newth was interested in a number of organisations in Foxton. He was for many years an active member and trustee of the Foxton Brass Band, a committeeman of the Horticultural Society in its early history and a life member of the Bowling Club, besides having been actively engaged in the activities of the Foxton Beautifying Society. He leaves a widow, one son (Mr W. J. Newth, Foxton) and two daughters (Mrs D.\Ball. Sydney), and Sister Newth (Sacred Heart Convent, Island Bay. Wellington). One son predeceased his father about 40 years ago. At the burial on Monday, the pall-bearers were Messrs H. Podmore, James Colev, R Rand, J. Madden. E. Huntley and F. Woods (the latter officially representing the Foxton Bowling Club). Rev. Mr Stote-Blandy officiated at the service in the Anglican Church, at which Mrs P. Jackson presided at the organ, and at the graveside, and the many beautiful floral tributes testified to the high esteem in which deceased was hold.
