SHIPPING REQUIREMENTS.

SIR A. SALTER'S MISSION. (British Official "Wireless.) (Rec. 9.13 a.m.) RUGBY, March 14. The following statement has been issued from No. 10 Downing Street: "In no sphere of our war effort is the help which the United States Government can. give us under the lend or lease legislation more urgent than that of shipping. Mr Churchill has, therefore, asked Sir Arthur Salter (Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Shipping) to proceed at once to the United States to discuss with the United States Administration the various forms which their help might take.

"Sir Arthur Salter will work under the general directions of the British Ambassador in Washington and will be a member of the British Supply Council in North America. During his absence he will continue in his present office as Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Shipping. "It will also be necessary for a representative of the British Government to discuss with the United States Administration the arrangement whereby foodstuffs will be made available to this country under the lend or lease arrangements. The Minister of Food has asked Mr Robert Brand to undertake this task and to be the head of a small mission whicn is uerng sent to the United States. Mr Brand will also be a member oi the British Supply Council." . Sir Arthur Salter was to-day received by the King prior to his departure and was sworn in as a member of the Privy Council. Mr Brand, who is a director of the banking firm of Lazard was deputychairman to Lord Cecil of Chelmwood when he was chairman of the Economic Council.
