HIGH SCHOOL

BOARD OF MANAGERS. Mr A. C. Buist presided at the monthly meeting of the Agricultural High School Board of Managers on Wednesday. Also present were Mrs J. E. Barltrop, Messrs E. H. Brewer, P. B. Desmond, T. L. Seddon, W. Andrews and A. Challis. Mr J. Knight (chairman) was unavoidably absent and sent an apology. As a mark of respect the meeting stood in l silence following reference to the passing of Mr H. G. Whitehead by the chairman, and it was resolved that the board's sympathy be ex- , tended to Mrs Whitehead and family. Mr ' Desmond was welcomed as a new member, having filled the vacancy caused by the death of Mr T. S. Goldsmith. Mr Desmond was appointed to the finance committee.

Favourable comment on the manner in which drill week had been carried out at the school was made by Mr Buist, wjio spoke of the enthusiasm shown by the teachers and pupils. Arising out of the headmaster's report, Mr Seddon said he was pleased that the old woodwork building at the Community Centre could be adapted for use by the drama groups and that the flooring had been provided by a parent in the King Country. A new building for the drama groups would have cost a tidy sum, but 'now that expense would not occur. The difficulty of securing corrugated iron was referred to by Mr Wild in correspondence dealing with the reconstruction of farm buildings. The chairman expressed . his view that it was unlikely that a supply of that material would bo available soon. The headmaster was authorised _ to purchase labour-saving devices and improvements. Mr Andrews was appointed to the farm committee. A discussion took place on the desirability of providing pipes for a pipe band at the school it being stated by the headmaster that there was a demand for instruments among the boarders who had already been given tuition in piping by Mr F. Dalzell and were enthusiastic. Several parents ' had provided their sons with sets of pipes. Mr Buist pointed out that Dannevirke and Levin and several other, centres nearby had school bands and he undertook to give tuition should the school be without a tutor at any time. It was decided to defer the matter. Staffing problems" owing to military requirements was referred to by Mr Wild in his report. The following reference to the passing of Mr Whitehead was made by Mr Wild in his report: "Mr Whitehead joined the staff in May, 1926, shortly after he had completed his University course, so that nearly the whole of his teaching service has been given to Feilding. Apart from th.j teaching of his subjects in the school, Mr Whitehead took a full part in extramural activities. He was housemaster of the Rangitikci day boys' house, master in charge of swimming instruction, and he coached teams both in criokct and football. He interested himself intimately in the welfare of his boys and he will be greatly missed. The sympathy of the whole school is extended to his widow and children, the eldest of whom has entered the school this year."
