STIPENDS OF CLERGY.

EFFECT OF HEAVY TAXATION. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, March 13. The salaries of ministers were discussed when the Christchurch Presbytery heard a deputation from the laymen’s executive of the maintenance ot the ministry fund, Messrs C. Ogilvie, A, C. Wells and H. P. Donald. “It was,” said Mr Ogilvie, “the unanimous opinion at the General Assembly that the salaries of ministers should »not be less than £330 a year. It was recognised that, with heavy taxation and increased costs, even tins salary is inadequate. It' is generally recognised that ministers of every denomination are definitely underpaid. It would be a great thing if the Presbyterian Church could decide and demonstrate that conditions can be and should be immediately improved. • ' ,e church has spent money generously in the erection of buildings, but this has been done often at the expense of the ministers’ stipends. No more extensive buildings should be undertaken till otir clergy are adequately paid.”’ Mr Wells declared that many laymen had long been convinced that !l' c ministry had been under-paid and Ur Donald considered the question of paymet of the ministry was a task for tn r laymen.
