POHANGINA COUNTY

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Pohangina County Council was held yesterday, Cr S. J. Strahan presiding. There wore also present Crs M. J. Arbon, P. Jensen’ PI. B. Claphain, W. McKay, T. E. Crainc, and W, Howell. The treasurer (Mr A. 15. Orgias) reported that thero were the following credits at the Bank of New Zealand: Cemetery account, £34 3s lOd; loan account, £359 10s lid; plant account, £sl Is lOd; loan assets, £450. After adjustments, the county fund account stood, at £1261 5s 9d. The rates levied totalled £7452 6s 4d and of this only £3O 6s 6d was outstanding. The arrears of rates outstanding amounted to £l6 9s 9d.

The report of the engineer (Mr D. Watson), which was adopted, stated that the month’s work consisted mainly of repairing and strengthening bridges, removing and replacing old timber culverts with concrete pipes and obtaining and cartjng gravel. Timber required for repairing bridge decking had been ordered. A number of roads throughout the country had been trimmed up with the auto-patrol where deterioration' of the surface bccauso of the dry weather was most evident. The Manawatu-Oroua Power Board’’wrote asking if the council would assist in the expense of installing lights at Pohangina where they were required by the Home Guard for drill purposes. It was reported that offers had been made for tljc provision of temporary poles and that in view of this the cost would bo kept to a minimum. The council agreed to provide half the cost and is to approach the Domain Board to ascertain if the latter will make a contribution. Cr McKay suggested that the sotting up of an Emergency Precautions Scheme organisation should bo advanced and, in a general discussion, several councillors expressed the view that the position should be thoroughly explored. i.u that action would be taken on the right lines. To this end, it was decided to communicate with the E.P.S. organisation in Feilding with a request that a speaker attend meetings in the county to explain the application of the scheme. The Counties’ Association forwarded u circular pointing out that expenditure could be undertaken in respect of the Emergency Reserve Corps.—Received. The Treasury forwarded a copy of a Gazette notice which authorised the council to raise £I2OO by loan for the purpose of building roadmen’s dwellings (over a 25 year term) and the council decided to apply to the Minister of Supply to ascertain if it could secure certain materials to provide one dwelling, at Coal Creek. The Director of National Service forwarded 25 copies of a booklet dealing with enlistments for the Homo Guard and the E.P.S. organisation.—Received. e An application was received on behalf of Mr F. B. Grotrian asking if he could cut six or eight cords of firewood from a reserve. —Left to the engineer and Cr. Arbon to arrange the matter. ,
