ASHHURST.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) ASHHURST, Jan. 20. On Friday evening a mooting of the Home Guard Committee was held, these present being Mr M. Murphy, Rev. Mr Farrell, Messrs W. G. Rotnicy, R. A Jones, J. Flowers, FI. Whitehead, and C. M. Kebbel. Mr Kebbel was elected chairman, Mr Farncll secretary and Mr Whitehead was nominated at> the local platoon leader. Regular committee meetings are to be held. .It was decided to join with the Frontiersmen’s next two' parades and then arrange future local weekly parades decided on by the local Guardsmen, of whom tliorc arc now 54. j A meeting of the Patriotic Committee was. held recently, •Mr M. P. Wiikin presiding. Others present were Mesdamos Brewer and Middleton, Messrs R. D. Davis, J. Flowers, H. Woodroofc, W. Brewer, A. J. Farncll, W. Drummond, M. Murphy, and R. A. Jones secretary. Apologies for absence were received from Mosdamcs Cook, Muldrock, Bleakeley, Messrs Muldrock, R. Finlay, R. Richards, and J. A. McDonoll. A letter was received from Signaller B. Sanders, of the N.Z.E.F., now in England, thanking the committee for the Christinas cake forwarded to him and his comrades, and which had been received in perfect condition. The resignation of Mr Alex Stephens from the committee was received owing to his entering camp with the Fifth Reinforcements. The secretary was instructed to write Mr Stephens thanking him for his work while on the committee and wishing him every success in his military career. The necessary arrangements for the next dance were completed and Mr R. D. Davis elected as M.C. with Mr H. Woodroofe as deputy. A local scrap metal drive is to bo commenced and local residents were asked to assist. Advertisements are to be inserted in the newspapers drawing attention to the drive. The Heart-to-Heart Appeal here closed with a total of £269 4s 6d collected. A further amount collected for the appeal lias now been received and is £5 16s, the prooceds of a raffle hold for a set of toys donated by Mr E. Holdway, of Ashhurst. The committee has now collected and paid to the Zone' E treasurer a total of £749 2s 5(1 since the formation of the committee nine months ago.
