PAID SECRETARY.
WANGANUI PATRIOTIC WORK. MR HANSFORD’S PROTEST. The granting of permission to the Wanganui Patriotic Council by the Wellington Provincial Patriotic Council to employ a paid, secretary was criticised by Mr A. E. Mansford, chairman of the Zone D (Palmerston North) Patriotic Committee at a meeting of the latter body yesterday. The, meeting decided to endeavour to have this decision reversed. Mr Mansford stated that at a Provincial Council meeting on Wednesday a proposal was made by the Wanganui council that a secretary he appointed for it at £5 a week. This lie had strongly opposed, saying that Palmerston Nor til had a secretary who gave his services free. The Wanganui committee had said that it proposed to have its work well done, and lie had replied that it was well done in Palmerston North, by a member of the society of Accountants. However, the Wanganui reouest had been carr.ed. The Wanganui representatives -had then asked that their’ request should not be reported in the Press and he (Mr Mansiord*) had objected again. A resolution had been carried asking the Press not to mention the matter, but he had made .it plain that That was “not going to muzzle him and that he would mention the matter at the first meeting. He thought this should be made known, because the money for the secretary was actually coming out of the soldiers’ pockets. He did not approve of this and was hoping that the Government would take some action. Mr K A. Henderson said that a protest should be made to the Provincial Council at the passing of this motion. There should be some person m Wanganui patriotic enough to give his time for nothing. It was decided that Mr Mansford l>e empowered to give notice of motion that the resolution be rescinded.
