FURTHER APPEALS HEARD. . . A further sitting of the Man-Power Committee was held in Palmerston North to-day, Messrs. T. L. Seddon (chairman), J. C. Young and W. C. Cantlon being the members. v.. "I The . following appeals against military service of men drawn in the first ballot were heard: Charles James llov Morgan, bandsaw filer; appeal by Win'. Cook and (Sons, Ltd., on the grounds of public interest; decision reserved. Mr A. B. Loughnan appeared for appellant firm and said Mr Morgan had already volunteered for service and would now have been overseas but for tho fact of • his work regarded as so essential. Mr W. Cook, managing-director of the firm, gave evidence. William Gladstone Powell, farmhand, of Bunnythorpe; appeal by. Richard Charles Powell, parent and employer, on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship; appeal dismissed ; not to be called on for service till January 15. Mr, J. A. Grant appeared for appellant. ; Colin Eldridge Penketh, pawnbroker, appeals by appellant and Alice Maud i Penketh on the grounds of undue hardship; appeal dismissed; not to be called on for l military service till December 31. Mr Louglman appeared for appellant. Joseph Frederick Rodden, public accountant ; appeals bv Augustus Edward Mansford (his partner) on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship ; decision reserved. Mr Mansford stated in a letter to the Committee that as he is Mayor of Palmerston North and has 17 public duties to perform his partner now has the main part in carrying out his business. Appearing in person, Mr Mansford said he and Mr Rodden were the only men in the business. Mr Rodden had already done considerable military service. It was most difficult to get anyone to replace him for two or three months, and included in the books to be attended to were those of two dairy companies. But for .bavins; a partner'Mr Mansford would not be able to carry out his public duties. The chairman said that the Committee realised that man-power must be considered 6n the basis of national service and not military service alone and for that reason would reserve its decision. All appeals for hearing in Palmerston North, where medical, certificates are available, were disposed of this morning. The. next sitting will be on Wednesday of next week.
