PAHIATUA.

Mrs Mclntyrc, of Auckland, who has been staying for the past few weeks with her son, Dr. E. B. Watson, of Pahiatua, hag left for Oamaru.

The sum of £3 lis 6d was raised for the London Relief Fund as the result of a euchre tourney and danco held at Ballance. Tho prizewinners were: —Mrs G. Eddie 1, Mrs MeKenzic 2; Mr N. Rowso 1, Mr C. McMurtrie 2. Consolation prizes were won by Mrs J. Moore and Mr F. Sinclair.

On five charges of obtaining in all nine gallons of petrol between May 1 and 14 without a license, Garret Francis O'Rourke was fined £1 on each and ordered to pay 10s costs on each charge-, at a sitting of the Magistrate's Court, yesterday, before Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M. Sergeant Whiting, who prosecuted for tho police, said O'Rourko was a tlock buyer and lived in Pahiatua, and it would havo been easy for him to secure a license from tho post office. Mr N. Rawson appearing for defendant said that his client was working at Pongoroa from May 1 to 14, and could not secure a licence as he did not > return till after post office business hours. Ho also pleaded lack of knowledge of the regulations governing special petrol licenses. The Magistrate said defendant was liablo ; to gaol for threo months, a £IOO fine, or both. He could have sent an agent to the post office for the license. Mrs G. E. Mabey, of Konini, was charged with driving a car and pulling out from tho kerb without giving any indication of her intentions, and also with not having renewed the warrant of fitness of hor car. Defendant, who was reprcsenti)d by Mr S. X K. Siddells, was fined 10s and ordered to pay 12s costs on the first charge and fined 5s and ordered to pay 10s costs on the second. The sum of £6 6s, for repairs to a Square fence in Pahiatua, was claimed by the Pahiatua Borough Council (Mr N. H. Rawson) from Evan Gothing, of Upper Hutt, proprietor of a hired . car which damaged the fence. Mr A. W. Hamilton, acting town clerk, said that ho had been informed by Mr Lovelock (town clerk) that on the morning after the accident a soldier calling himself Gordon S. McKay had admitted the damage to him. Mr S. K. Siddells (Mayor) said that the oar had been hired from a public rental garage by McKay, who thus became agent to the owner. McKay was thought to bo overseas. The Magistrate said that he thought that Gething's liability had not been proven, but roscrved his decision.
