I The Mayor (Mr M. E. Perreau) officiated jat the opening ceremony or the F’oxton Tennis Club, ..when there was a largo ati tendance and numerous games were p.ay- ' ed. At the Croquet Club s opening Mr i<. Woods of the Boiling Club) welcomed those present and Mrs Perrcau (president of the Croquet Club) struck the first ball. Competitions resulted: Angles, Mrs G. Walls; target, Mrs S. Newth; golf, Mrs E. Thane; hurry scurry, Mesdames Bummell and Slianly (Manakau). The 1940-41 season of tho Foxton Bowling Club was opened on Saturday, when rinks were present from Feilding, Shannon, Levin, Otaki and Palmerston North. Mr F. Woods (president) welcomed the visitors, and Mr Ilausman (vice-president of the Manawatu Bowling Centre) expressed the hope that tho club would experience a successful season. He apologised for the absence of the president (Mr J. A. Nash). Mr Woods called on Mrs Woods to play the first bowl and, this done, declared the green open for play. Officers elected at the annual mooting of the Basketball Club are: President, Mr James Macdonald; vice-president. Mr W. E. Hale; socretary. Miss B. Devonshire; assistant-secretary, Miss E. Titcombe; club captain, Miss M. Altrce; vice-cap-tain, Miss. B. Devonshire; committee, Misses N. Ilalidcne. I. Colev, 0. Saveli, J. Madden, M. Madden. P. Bowden and Mr R. Simpson. Mr Macdonald, on behalf of the club, called on Mrs. A.. Vertongen, one of the most enthusiastic members, whoso marriage took place recently, to accept a token of appreciation. and goodwill front her fellow members.

At a meeting of the Patriotic Committee. correspondence concerning the Territorial camp on the racecourse was dealt with. Mr Macdonald (organiser) 'stated that he had. conferred with tho camp quartermaster and had made arrangements for entertaining the men and attending to their requirements. It was decided that a sub-committee, to act. as an entertainment committee, be set up and this was elected ns follows: Messrs Macdonald. Podmore. Wilson. Field and Barron. It was decided ito invito householders willing to receive men from the camp at, their homes during the evenings to hand in their names to the committeq. Mr B. Daw* forwarded a statement in connection -yvitli. the parcels cent to local men on active service by the pupils of Forms I and II of the District High School. The statement disclosed the fact that a credit balance of £6 18s 2d was in hand and it was decided that this money he retained by Mr Daws in the meantime.
