AUSTRALIANS AROUSED.

SIB T. BEECHAM’S REMARKS. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON,, Oct. 8. Sir Thomas Beecham’s outburst against Australia is described by Mr T. H. Ashton, secretary of the_ Australian Imperial Force Association, as being in the very worst tnste and not worthy of serious attention by Australians living in New Zealand or l,v New Zealanders themselves. His attack on the war effort did not follow the facts. The figures relating to manpower, organisation, and munitions production published recently m New Zealand newspapers would in themselves prove him wrong. , “What does Sir Thomas Beechamknow of the sacrifice involved in raising five divisions of men, or of the sacrifices these men are now facing. The Auckland outburst is not an iso-, lated case. Sir Thomas Beecham has said things like that wherever he goes. The' danger is his nonsense might he taken for truth by those who do not know the sort of man he is. In any cose, his criticism in that form is most uncalled for from a visitor who has been a guest conductor in theCommonwealth.” Other Australians said in regard to the interview that Sir Thomas Beecham was''perfectly at liberty to. criticise Australian art, literature, and the drama, hut they insisted that he should not deny their existence.
