THE NEWNESS OF SPRING.

Spuing which brings something new every year has been lavisii with her gifts this year. The mildness of winter has given us a season well in advance of what we are accustomed to expect, and everywhere the countryside is clothed with the verdant richness that connotes the change from winter to the brightness of returning plant life. Palmerston North has well been called a gar-den-city and just at this moment it reflects the luxuriousness of a gracious spring-time. It is cherry blossom week in the city, when the magnificent specimens of this favourite tree are-to be seen in all their awakened beauty in private gardens, streets, and in the really wonderful avenue at the Esplanade. The season litis been gracious to the trees and their response is seen in the wealth of picturesque blooms that have daily been drawing people to the Esplanade on what may well be regarded as a yearly pilgrimage to enjoy a short-lived panorama. The Square gardens have also reflected the generous spring. They are one of the city’s richest assets and many people from overseas have recalled their visit to Palmerston North by its welldesigned and splendidly kept Square gardens. The value in another direction —to the business community—was mentioned by a correspondent writing in the “Manawatu Standard” not without exaggeration, and their advantage in this respect cannot be completely estimated. The beautified area within the Square is. a rich heritage for Palmerston North’s citizens, and theirs is the duty to see that it is always preserved. The manner in which these city reserves are reflecting the beauty of the season is a marked tribute to the city curator and his staff -who are responsible for their excellent maintenance.
