ASHHURST.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) AS-HHURST, Oct. 7. At a meeting of the Patriotic Committee Mr M. Murphy presided and others present were Mrs R. Cook, Messrs W. Brewer, W. Drummond, M. P. Wilkin, J. McDoncll, Y. Muldrock, J. Flowers and R. A. Jones (secretary). Correspondence was read from the Zone E chairman and secretary, who thanked the committee for I continued assistance and congratulated the committee on its efforts. The secretary reported on the balance from farewell and patriotic functions, and it was decided to forward £SO to the zone treasurer for the Provincial Fund. It was decided, to seek the co-operation of the Women’s Institute in appointing six ladies to the conimittee. The School Committee met recently. Mr F. A. Dunstall presided and others present were Messrs' If. Hyndman, It. A. Jones, J. A. McDoneli and R. D. Davis (secretary). Mr R. N. Finlay (headmaster) reported there were 108 pupils on the roll, and the attendance had been good. The chairman spoke of the death of Pilot-Oflicer Eric Orgius, who had been a pupil at the school and whose mother had been a • sc..v.i..r »ur many years. The secretary was instructed to write a letter of sympathy to Mr and Mrs Orgias, aaid members 'Stood in silence as a mark of respect. The school inspectors had reported very favourably on the work of both teachers and children, and expressed pleasure at the appearance of school and grounds. The film strip projector ordered some time ago had been received and is proving very popular with the pupils. The water system was giving trouble again. The board is to be asked to have the trouble remedied. Further concrete paths had been laid down. Entries for the calf and agricultural clubs were satisfactory. In the Manawatu primary schools’ Association football knock-out competitions the school team were successful and won the Young' Shield. A grant is to be sought from the Education Board for renovations to the tennis courts. At the conclusion of the business the chairman stated that he would bo resigning from the committee as ho had been transferred on promotion to another district. He regretted he was going, and thanked tho committee for their co-operation. On behalf of the committee, the secretary congratulated Mr Dunstall on his promotion and wished both hint- and Mrs Dunstall a happy future. He referred to the previous term of Mr Dunstall as chairman of the committee and to the many enjoyable and harmonious meetings conducted in the host interests of the school, in which Mr Dunstall took a groat interest. On behalf of the school staff, Mr Finlay eulogised the assistance rendered by the retiring chairman, -whose tact and wisdom in dealing with all matters had earned him the respect of all his associates. Messrs McDonell, Hyndman and Jones all briefly congratulated Mr Dunstall and endorsed tho previous speakers’ remarks.
