Early Shearing. If the present fine weathe'r continues sheep-shearing in Canterbury is expected to begin in some sheds a fortnight earlier than usual, and in consequence it is not expected that there will be any great difficulty in securing labour. Shearing in Canterbury usually starts about Show Week in November.
Australia's Record Butter Production. According to the Commonwealth Statistician butter production in Australia in 1909-40 established u new record of 4,253,600 cwt i'aotory output was 4,705,039 cwt, which ‘was l?0,000ewt more than in the previous year, and 84,OOOcwt more thun the previous peak veur of 1934-35. Conditions In The North
Although feed was still plentiful, the heavy, warm rains which were experienced lust week were of immense value to pastures in the north, says an exchange. Prior to the rum. conditions were becoming rather dry for the time of ye'ar. The market for store cattle has renin ned keen and the recent rains will probably result in a further firming.
Pigs And Cheese. The drive to increase pig production has to some extent come into conflict with the drive to increase the production of cheese. The supervisor of the Canterbury District Pig Council (Air If. W. Mclntosh) reported that several farmers on Banks Peninsula, who were now supplying cheese factories instead of separating, were troubled over the consequences to their pigs. One cheese factory had installed « wiicy tank instead of allowing the whey to run into the sea. MV Mclntosh reported that he had been able to advise an alternative feeding schedule to allow the use of whey.
