WORK AT AWAPUNI.
OLD BILL’S GALLOP
(By-“ Spectator.”)
Steady rain fell during work at Aivapuni this morning, and the going was slippery. The course proper was open, the flags being in the middle. Candidates for the OtakiMaori fixture wore among those given work, but the conditions were against good times being recorded. Ono of, the best of the early gallops was between The Buzzer, Last Acre and Don Quox over a mile. The distance was covered in 1.53£. War Credit was well ahead of a companion at the end of five furlongs covered in 1.10 Bayadoer was not hurried over four furlongs. Old Bill galloped over seven furlongs. As usual, ho was doing his best work at the finish. Ho covered the last four furlongs in 56sec and tho last three in 41sce.
Old Surrey was also givon a gallop over seven furlongs and could have gone faster. His time for the last six was 1.28.
Anita Foe and Sleeveless galoped over six furlongs and were on terms at the finish. The distance was covered in 1.26, the last five taking 1.10. They finished on terms, taking 1.10 1-5. Bonicton and Colonel Bogey went together oyer six furlongs, the task being complotod in 1.28 2-5. Social Credit galloped half a mile in 54scc, and Star Mark took a trifle longer over the same distance, slackening a little towards the finish. Brazil and tho hurdler owned by Mrs T. C. Lowry in Mrs R. W. McDonald’s stable went together over four flights ol hurdles, sliapirg fairly well. _ The latter has been showing promise at jumping. Riding Engagements. Although tho Waikato Racing Club offered the free use of its racecourse for Labour Day to the Waikato Hunt Club because tho club’s own course at- Cambridge is being- used as a Territorial camp, advice has how been received that tho Minister of- Internal Affairs (Hon. W. E. Parry) will not agree to tho change, says an exchange. When tho Hunt Club track was taken over for tho use of the Waikato Regiment, and its buildings occupied by the military authorities, it was considered impracticable to hold the Labour Day fixture on that ground. The Waikato Racing Club offered it 6 course at To Itapa, and this change of venue wan agreed to by, the Racing Conference. News of the Minieicr’s decision has caused surpriso and disappointment.
