ENTRAINING TROOPS.
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—ln your local in Saturday’s issue re the departure of recruits from Palmerston North I was rather disappointed to read the retort of a Defence Department officer in regard to the letter iii your previous issue. As a returned soldier, too old and decre*ft to serve again. I look on it as an honour to attend the departure of our splendid young chaps every chance I get, just to be able to wave them goodbye. and good luck. When this defence officer said that in future the public would be kept off the platform I trust that he spoke hastily and has since realised what a cruel injustice that would be to the mothers, sweethearts, and others who treasure the opportunity of saying goodbye to those Sear to them. The splendid patriotic spirit shown at the station, particularly -when the hand was there, is just what we want, so please, defence officer, let things go along as they are and I am positive you will earn the gratitude of the public.—l am, etc..
OLD SOLDIER Palmerston North, 7-10-40.
