NEW GOVERNOR-GENERAL

Sin Cyril Newall’s translation to New Zealand to succeed Lord Galway as Governor-General has aroused the keenest interest throughout the Empire. Eor three years past he has been the Chief of the British Air Staff. A pioneer of the Royal Air Eorce, he was specially equipped by expen ence and administrative ability to assume the tremendous task in 1937 of building the R.A.E. and it is no exaggeration to say that he has constructed the finest Air Eorce in the world. As the London Times says, he has seen it grow out of all knowledge both in size and efficiency, and he retained his command long enough to see his ambition achieved. The Army and Navy have given us past "holders of the gubernatorial office; agriculture has been represented by Lord Bledisloe, and it is particularly fitting that the Royal Air Eorce, the youngest arm of the Services, should now have one of its most eminent members . chosen as GovernorGeneral of a Dominion to whom air defence is of paramount importance. Sir Cyril Newall gives some hint of this latter fact when he says he is eager for close association with our defence forces, particularly the Air Eorce, and he desires to study defence problems at first hand. The choice has not been without its surprise to aviation circles in Britain, and certainly it was quite unexpected in this country, and if in laying down his comihand at this moment, when the Royal Air Force is triumphing over its German enemies, Sir Cyril Newall deserves a well earned rest he will find it in this land of genial climate and opportunity for sport when time can be spared from strenuous official duties. His appointment is indeed a compliment to this Dominion which will find his wonderful air record most helpful at a very critical time in its history.
