E. N. Hill, car salesman, of Wellington, was charged in the . Magistrate’s Court that on May 15 last he drove a car in a negligent manner on the Foxton-Levin highway. Ho was also charged with an offence under the Police Offences Act. Evidence was given by W. J. Hawkcs, Woodville County engineer, Traffic Inspector 11. J. Fowler, and Constable J. Forsyth. The Magistrate amended the second charge and convicted and fined defendant £3 on each charge with costs totalling £1 _lss. H. Flutey was charged with beingvin possession of two bottles of beer in the vicinity ' of the Town Hall on the night of July 30, the occasion of a dance. A fine of £1 10s was imposed, with costs 10s, and an order made for the confiscation of the liquor: A committee meeting of the Women’s Institute was presided over by Mrs J. R. Middleton (president), who welcomed the newly-elected secretary (Mrs F. Gay), the treasurer (Mrs J. Wilson) and also the new committee member (Mrs T. E. Hughes). At a meeting of the members of the To Awahou Sea Scout committee. Scoutmaster 11. Webber presented a satisfactory report in connection with the Scouts, stating that good progress was being made with' the work of preparing the boat for the coming season. At the annual meeting Akela Leader Wilson, of Bulls, will attend and will show films on scouting in Norway and Sweden. Commissioner Stubbs and party from Palmerston North will also be present and a film on the Australian Scout Jamboree will be shown by Commissioner Stubbs.

Mr S. W. Barber presided at the annual meeting of the Foxton United Sports Association. The prospects for the future were discussed and Messrs S. R. Austin and J. W. Barber moved that the association go into 1 recess for the duration of the war. An amendment ■ was moved, howrr 6r ’i Messrs H. Hamer and R. O. Hornblow that no motor-cycle meeting be tins year, and the amendment was carried. The officers were re-eleotcd on bloc. ‘Mr D. Collison (Palmerston North) wrote regretting his inability to be preSC .M a - s , he had left that day to enter camp With the Fourth Reinforcement. The president regretted the temporary loes of Mr Collison, who, he said, had done much to further the interests of the association. It was decided to .forward Mr Collison a cheque in recognition of. his services and to convey the association’s beet wishes for Ins future. The report and balance-sheet were adopted.
