ENEMY SUBMARINES.
BRITISH COUNTER-MEASURES
(British Official Wireless.)
(Ecc. 12.35 p.m.) RUGBY, Oct. 4. The Admiralty, in announcing the addition of seven German U-boats and two Italian submarines sunk and others' damaged, adds: “It has never been the policy of the Admiralty to announce successes against U-boats when they occur, or at regular intervals, since such announcements would bo of operational value to the enemy. It is known, moreover, that the moral effect of the disappearance of a Üboat without an indication of . the cause of loss is a potent factor among U-boat personnel.” Interesting light is thrown on this communique by a report received toT day from Balkan sources that the published statistics of certain German insurance companies reveal that the average life of an officor or man serving on German submarines is 62 days.
