The Governor-General (Lord Galway), attended by Captain Lord Dormer, A.D.C., left Wellington last evening for Christchurch to fulfil several engagements.

Her Excellency Lady Galway, wife of the Governor-General, visited Palmerston North on Thursday to inspect the cherry blossoms at the Esplanade. Her Excellency makes an annual trip here tor that purpose, and on this occasion again expressed pleasure at the profusion of blossom. She remained here for about two hours.

Air Norman Aloore. of Main Street AVest, left on Thursday for Harewood aerodrome, Christchurch.

Leading-Aircraftsman B. Harvey, who was previously on the staff of Alessrs Watson Bros., Ltd., is now stationed at the AVeraroa School of Instruction, and is completing the course as an air-gunner.

Mr Alelvillo D. Ross, late of the Union Bank, Gore, passed through Palmerston North on Thursday on 'iris way to join the Fourth Reinforcements at Papakura. Alt Ross is the second son of Air and Airs Andrew Ross, of Palmerston North.

Lieut.-Colonel R. H. Marryatt, D. 5.0., who has been appointed area commander of the Home Guard at Auckland, has telegraphed to MajorGeneral 11. Young, Dominion Commander, stating that he will be unable to accept the post as he has accepted another military appointment. The British Consul in Seattle for the past three years, Mr C. G. Hope Gill, has arrived in New Zealand to spend a period of leave before going to Bagdad on transfer. He is accompanied by his wife, a New Zealander, whom he married in London in .1937. She was formerly Miss Collin CampbellSmith, daughter of Dr and Mrs A. Campbell-Smith, of Nelson. Mr G. G. Hancox, principal of AVairarapa College, w'ho was for some years director of the Palmferston North Technical School, has been granted six months’ leave of absence in order to take up military duties with the Territorial Forces. Air Hancox served in the Great War and has been for a long time an officer with the Territorials. He is spending the week end in Palmerston North.

The death occurred recently at Blenheim w*here lie was spending a noliday, of Air A. J. Stanley, who was formerly associated with the staff of the Palmerston North Post Office! Mr Stanley, who was here for four or five years shortly before the outbreak of the Great War, was a popular officer and was held in very high esteem. An enthusiastic hockey player, he was a member of the Post Office team. He was later transferred to various other districts and ultimately retired from the service at the Thames, moving to Christchurch to live in retirement. Air Stanley was a brother-in-law to Air J. H. Bowman, of Palmerston North. The death occurred yesterday of an old and respected citizen of Wellington, Air William Thomas Hildreth, at the age of 82 years, more than 60 of which were lived in Wellington. Air Hildreth attended the Grand Lodge Assembly at Christchurch some months ago, and was taken seriously ill. Air Hildreth’s public service included office for several years as a member of the old Karori Borough Council, leading to his election as Alayor of Karori, and later to the City Council, of which he w r as a member from 1915 to 1919 and again from 1929 to 1931. He was also a member of the AVellington Harbour Board for several years. He was the last foundation member of the Wellington Volunteer Fire Police. A keen Alason, he was the first Alaster of the Lodge Karori, and a Past Alaster of Lodge St. Andrew. Though not a foundation member of the Wellington Bowling Club, his name appears in the club records of nearly half a century ago. A daughter if Airs W. Aloore, of Palmerston North.
