(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, Oct. 2. The Mayor (Mr E. Butt) presided at the Borough Council meeting. A!ho present were C'rs. A. E. Hyde, W. Clayton, J. A. Roach, R. E. Downes and E. Perry. The district agent, Social Security Department, wrote stating that his department had approved tno continuation of the subsidy on the basis of £3 18s 9d per man-week in respect of the employment of three men for a further period of five weeks. The officcr-in-charge of the War Library Service acknowledged receipt of a further supply of books for men on active service. In _ forwarding a cheque for £44 19s 4d, being the council's share of heavy traffic fees for the last quarter, the clerk, Kairanga CountyCouncil, said the town clerk, Palmerston North, had written to his council inquiring whether it was proposed in future allocations to adopt as a basis of the mileage in each county only that portion of the roaxls not . maintained by the State. In thin regard it was not possible to depart from the usual practice without the sanction of all the local bodies in the group, in view of the fact that the total of the metalled roado in the respective districts w-as taken .as the basis for the apportionment of the fees. The council resolved that the basis of allocations remain as at present. The secretary- of the Shannon Cricket Club made application for the use of the Domain for the ensuing season, on the same conditions as last year, stating that the grounds would require cutting at least once a week. Jt was resolved that the club be granted the use'of the Domain, the grass to bo cut subject to the council having the lab-our-available. At any time the council is not in a position to carry out this work, the club will l>c notified, arid it will he necessary for it to make its own arrangements. for keeping the grounds in order. An application for the supply of water to 22 acres outside the borough boundary, received from Mr H. Murdock, was approved at a charge of £2 10s ■ per year, the work to be carried out by Mr Murdock at bis own expense, but under the supervision of Ihc borough foreman. The town clerk reported that the material for sealing Stafford Street and part of Pliinmcr Terrace Was to hand and the work would be put in hand as soon as the weather was suitable. Cr Clayton reported that the building committee bad inspected the borough foreman's dwelling and the house occupied by Me. Rid.ey, and bail authorised ’ the papering of rooms and repaire to a bath. It was resolved to purchase one copy of the Woffington Provincial History for the library. Air A. Semple, who has been postmaster for the last nine years, has received notice of his transfer to \\ aipawa. The local branch of the R.S.A. hi* sent forward Christmas parcels to the following Shannon boys overseas; Privates J. 0. Robinson, R. J. and J. S. Hayes, A. T.

Spitfire fund Mill Hill, who was on the Bank of New Zealand staff, left on Wednesday to enter Trontbam cam]) and was farowellcd by the Buckley Coif Club. Mr I). Aitctnson, ot the local school teaching staff, also leaves for Trontbam on Thursday, and vvas farewelled by the school and staff. Mr L. Small has taken up a position in Wellington. Mre P Crorar (Wairoa) is visiting her daughter, Mrs B. J. Brann. The vital statistics for the September quarter were: Births 11, deaths nil, marriages 5. l-as! year in the same quarter births were IT, deaths 2, and marriages 1. At the Borough Council mooting the Mayor and councillors made reference to the sterling qualities of the late Mr W. 11. Gunning, who was one of the first councillors of tho borough, and had takenan active interest for many years in the advancement of tho town and district. A motion of svmpatliv was passed in silence. In the first quota of soldiers’ parcels sent from Shannon overseas a note was put in asking for a report on the condition of the parcel on receipt. Replies have been received from Corporal R. H. Burdus, Gunner R. E. Ncame, Gunner C. Crawford, and Pie. J. C. W right , (Div. Postal Unit), who stated that his home town was Palmerston North. None of the men are known to the council, but the town clerk reported that lie had -fop.ted thanking them for their courtesy and wishing them all the best of good luck. All commented on the pleasure the receipt of parcels have given them. A further packing of goods for the Lady Galway Guild, a largo carton of mixed clothing, including a number of now gar ments, was sent from Shannon. A large case of excellent goods, including cot quilts, frorii (ho Miranui Ladies’ Guild; and a quantity of mixed clothing anci footwear from tho Opiki Women’s Institute. As guilds have been asked not to 6-icnd moneys in , band ,on the purchase of now material and as second-hand goods I havo now been used it was decided there I would not be any further regular packing ! date set. It was resolved to send special notes of thanks lo three ladies who had done yeoman service in the interests of tho guild. Sergeant-Observer B. Annesloy paid a visit ‘to his mother, Mrs Terrill, Moutou, during the week-end.
