A new Gaming Bill in the course of preparation condemned the bookmaker outright, this to be an unlawful calling with a maximum penalty of a fine of £IOO or three months’ gaol. Sir Rupert Boyce, Professor of Pathology at Liverpool University, had dis-‘ covered that yellow fever was peculiar to West Africa and was not malarial fever, as previously believed. Lknd was changing hands to a large degree on the Waikato area, small farms being in demand. The settlement of aliens in Great Britain had been reduced to 10,000 in the last year from 27,000 in the year before. The incidence of crime had shown a decline as a result.
