BADIANT LIVING

Most of the ailments of the physical body were due to three things—-eieyitai-isation, congestion and inflammation — and when we could overcome these three wo could go a long way towards bringing health into the world, said Dr. Herbert Sutcliffe, D.jSc., PhD., b'.F.Sc. (London), food scientist, in a largely attended lecture given in Palmerston North on Wednesday evening. In spit© of all scientific knowledge, he added, hospitals were full and disease rampant. We were evidently unable to deal with file situation and there seemed to be some misapprehension about life itself. The study of radiant living was recommended by the speaker. This, he said, would bring the realisation that it could be applied to bring virile health. He had already founded 26 schools of radiant living in different parts of the world, including four in New Zealand, said Dr. Sutcliffe. The subject of the address last night was “Devitalised and Diseased at 40. — Why?” Dr. Sutcliffe said he had been travelling the world for the past ten years, bringing his philosophy of radiant living in order that thousands might be re-made by putting into practice what they were told. No matter how much knowledge a person desired to acquire, if ho did not know the vicissitudes of his own mind or his capabilities he could not make the best of his life. The paramount thought in every mind to-day was that we must do something about the terrible catastrophe through which the world was passing. He stressed the importance of maintaining healthy bodies and vital minds. He had noticed that New Zealand was building a health consciousness and a realisation that there was a. way to better health and he could congratulate New Zealand people and towns that they were going ahead and doing their part in building this up. At tbe back of ill health would be found despondency, hesitation, fear, and hopelessness, and this was what the enemy wanted to bring about devitalisation. If we wanted to be up-to-the-minute and could do something about it we must and should. Everyone could do a tremendous part in prayer so long as they knew what they were praying about and how. We sympathised with people for having ailments, and made excuses when they had not been doing their duty but wasting other people's time, said Dr. Sutcliffe. If we said God gave us health and intelligence to maintain it, it was strange that round about 40 to 45 wo produced ailments. Lack of confidence was one of tile deformities that caused us to wear a crutch. It seemed we had a body to hang clothes on, but not to keep in good order. We were inclined to let go because we did not allow our investigating minds to find out what was wrong. AH kinds of ailments were due to devitalisation, such as the common cold, congestion of the body causing constipation and inflammation, which was nature’s warning. Dr. Sutcliffe enumerated many diseases which he said there was no need for anyone to have, such as rheumatism, rheumatoid arthritis, liver and kidney troubles, etc. Everyone should take steps to make sure the body was clean, and this could be done by watching what went into the mouth. Right thinking and a knowledge of the right foods and bow to eat them were essential to good health. All ailments could be overcome by God’s methods. It was a mistake, the speaker said, to think that goitre was incurable, nor should we be quite so prone as to assume that it was caused by lack of iodine. The secondary cause might be a lack of iodine, but the primary cause was entirely mental and emotional, through nervous apprehension and resentment. These emotional conditions affected the throat centre and so weakened the gland that the second cause, lack of sufficient iodine, brought on the goitre. Dr. Sutcliffe pointed out the necessity of eating foods containing suitable elements for particular kinds of bodies. It was not true that all would be healthy by eating the same foods, he said, but it was true that we could find out our particular chemical and bodily needs and by eating intelligently reach and maintain health. The speaker referred to the value of citrus fruits \ and said that as they were some of tbe finest fruits for maintaining health it was a pity that they could not be more readily available for the table. Appetising salads were displayed and foods suggested, particiilarlv vegetables and fruits, and at the conclusion of the lecture many questions were answered. “Don’t get hot and bothered by deficiencies there may be in your soils,

said Dr. Sutcliffe, answering a question. “This is a wonderful country and you have beautiful sunshine and surroundings. If you complain about the good things God has given you and you refuse to adapt yourself-to conditions, it is you who are lacking. Don t get that hopeless attitude. Harmonise yourself with conditions and you can get health. When we are up against it, there is always a way out. I believe in prayer. Don’t fill your minds with slights’ and blame someone else for your troubles. I am here to build. up health and prove that you can get it.
