AN EXCELLENT RESPONSE

-I here was an excellent response by residents of the Kairanga County to the appeal for waste metals, the collection taking place on Wednesday, and tons of material are now lying at two dumps, one at Eitzherbert, the other at Racecourse Road, A wap uni. The metals donated varied widely and included large quantities of those which are now rising in value and which are needed to maintain essential war supplies.

Three four-ton motor lorries were used in the collection, which extended throughout the day, and all returned with lull loads. Where there were blind roads the co-operation of settlers was sought to bring the metals to the main routes and in this a very willing response was made. In a number of cases residents have expressed regrei that they were unable to leave out more and that further metals which have now been collected were being brought into the city yesterday.

Aluminium headed the list for quantity, with copper second. All kinds of pots and pans and aluminium fittings were included in the first category, and the copper collection included old copper boilers, ball-cocks from water troughs, kettle, and other utensils. Brass and bronze appeared in old hanging lamps, taps, caps of various kinds, tops off old iron bedsteads and other articles. Tin-foil and balls of lead were -included also, the items showing that children had played arc appreciable part in the collection of the metals from some homes.

Dumps were established at various schools and the children, making a concerted effort, built some to considerable proportions. In one case, however, where the collection was delayed, a number of utensils disappeared and precautions have . been taken to obviate any repetition of this at the main clumps. An appreciable contribution is to be made by the County Council itself in the donation of metals which are now not required. In one case derelict motor lorries are to. be stripped of their radiators, these being aluminium ones, while other metals will also be available.
