SUMMER SPORT.

MANAWATU CLUB

Summer games enthusiasts who attend the official opening of the Manawatu Bowling, Croquet, and Tennis Club’s season to-morrow will find some of the most beautiful scenery to be seen in any of Palmerston North’s recreation areas at the present time. Trees, shrubs, rockeries, and flower plots all contribute to a blaze of colour. Cherry blossom trees surrounding the grounds are breaking into bloom now, while clematis is also prominent. In the garden plots are large varieties of colourful blooms. The entrance leading _ from Fitzherbert Avenue has been laid out in rockeries and garden plots, and the paths running round the bowling and croquet greens have been lined with flower beds. Five windbreak ponga shelters have been renovated, while an additional one has been erected. Clematis has been planted around the bases of five of these shelters, the top of the other shelter being already covered with that plant. ' The two large bowling greens, which have been named after Messrs J. B. Gerrand and C. F. Spooner, w'ho have held the office of president of the bowling club for the longest period, are in perfect playing condition, having been sprayed with weed-killer and topdressed during the autumn. Additional seats have been erected around the Spooner green, which is the one furthest away from Fitzherbert Avenue. The croquet greens have also received much attention from the caretaker (Mr W. Clayton"). New flower plots have been arranged round these greens where there is no background of - shrubs. The appearance of the tennis courts, too, should ensure for all players that they will be in perfect condition throughout the season. Besides the many improvements made to the greens, courts and flower beds, the club-house has also received attention. It has been repainted and the interior has been lined with boarding. An additional pavilion for the use of tennis players is at present in the course of erection.

The work at present being carried out should be completed bv to-morrow and tlie results achieved should reflect much credit on the officers of the club and the caretaker.

TERRACE END CLUB. The Terrace End Club, which will open its season to-morrow afternoon, also has its grounds and surroundings in splendid order and a highly enjoyable season is anticipated, much work having been done to ensure this.
