JERSEY BULLS IN DEMAND.

SUCCESSFUL STUD SALE. PRICES 25 PER CENT TJP. With a good standard maintained in the stock throughout the otiering, prices at the 18th annual Manawatu bull and heifer sale, conducted at the Showgrounds yesterday, showed on the average a 25 P* 31 * cent, advance on those at last year s nature. Although there were no sensational figures reached, the prices were well maintained to the close of the. sale. The auctioneers were Messrs Wright Stephenson and Co., Ltd., and Messrs Abraliaui aim Williams, Ltd. The top price. Signs., was paid by Mr A. J. Nimmo (Wellington), for Pakowhai Volunteer's Sam, the vendor being Mr 11. J. Lancaster (Glen Oroua). This bull, born in September, 1938, is from a dam bred by < Vilonel Weston (Taranaki) anu the blood goes back to the great Dreaming Sam, whose descendants have been among the most sought after cattle in New Zealand for several years. This bull is the third generation in the family. The next highest priced bull was sold by Mr A. Montgomerie (Kauwhata) to Mr Lloyd (Mangumaire), this animal being placed reserve champion in the judging beloro the sale, which was carried put by Mr J. Leach (Woodville). The bull, a three-year-old, is of a deep and robust typo The bull adjudged the champion, entered by Mr 11. J. Fourneau (Pakowhai, Hastings) reached 47gns., being bought at that iigure by Mr A. H. Burwell (Kaimata, Taranaki). This animal aLo shows the true Jersey characteristics to a marked degree and is a high-class examplo of the breed. Although Mr Fourneau’s entries were offered late in the sale they came in for keen competition. A suggestion has been made that instead of being sold as they come in the catalogue, the entries placed in the judging .be sold half an hour after the sale opens. Prior to tho sale a committee of judges examined all tho entries and, disqualified a number as, in their opinion, not being up to the standard set; hut as an indication of the strength of the demand, when these were sold at the close several reached the 20gns. mark.
