SCHOOL COMMITTEES

WEST END SCHOOL. At a meeting of ; the West End School Committee on Wednesday, Mr G. Tremaine presided. The resignation of Mr N. Hume from the committee was received with regret. Mr J. W. Davis was elected to fill the vacancy. Mr E. Humphries was appointed to t'ho baths committee. This committee was instructed to spend £2O on the painting of the baths. It was decided to make an application to the Wanganui Education Board for the provision of additional wash basins and bubble drinking fountains. A grant of £5 for purchases for the infant room was approved. The headmaster (Mr H. W. Jackson) reported that the roll number now stood at 505 and the average attendance for the past four weeks had been 407.8. Airs E. Allen was acting as supernumerary and Mrs S. Ward as relieving teacher in place of Miss E. McLean and Mr C. Bell, respectively, each of whom had been granted >a week’s leave of absence. During the month 25 dozen eggs had been donated by the children and these had been distributed equally to the Willard and | All Saints’ Children’s Homes. Dr. | Body, Dr. Platts-Mills and Nurse Bell | had been engaged in giving diphtheria immunisation treatment.

IMPROVEMENTS AT HOKOWHITU

Mr H. W. Cox presided at a meeting of the Hokowhitu School committee on Wednesday. Congratulations were extended to Mr lv. M. White, wno lias been acting as headmaster of the Hokowhitu School for the last six months, on his appointment as assist-ant-master iat the intermediate School, it was decided to grant all children who secured life-saving certificates last year a free season ticket tor the school baths ior the coming season. The act-ing-headmaster (Mr White) stated that the roll number now stood at 289. Most ol the plan of improvements submitted at the previous committee meeting had been carried out. A donation of two dozen shrubs and 130 plantings for a hedge had been received from Mr Harrison. The egg collection for the Willard Home was being carried out this week, and so far had yielded excellent results. Dr. Heycock, Nurse Bell and Miss Millar had inoculated over 100 of the junior children against diphtheria. Dr. Duncan Cook was also in attendance one day during the treatment. Messrs Blake (senior inspector), Crosby and Merrington made their annual inspection visit, and submitted a favourable report, the school environment and general conditions being graded very high.

RUSSELL STREET SCHOOL

At a meeting of the Russell Street School Committee on Tuesday evening Mr J. A. Grant presided. The chairman reported that arrangements had been completed with fine Education Board for the levelling and resowing of the front lawn and of the piece of land recently added to the school grounds. Congratulations and thanks were extended to the headmaster, staff, ladies’ committee and helpers upon the success of the children’s ball. fhe resignation of Mr V. Hobin, who has been appointed to the- Intermediate School staff, was received and accepted with regret. The chairman as the committee’s representative on the Intermediate School Committee reported upon the recent meeting ol that committee. The headmaster (Mr J. Connor) reported that the average attendance had been fairly good; that the children’s ball had been most successful, and that the school had recently been visited by t l lic schools’ medical officers in connection with the scheme for inoculation of children of and under school age against diphtheria. A large percentage \of the parents have expressed their desire to have their children inoculated. The medical officers will be returning to the school at an early date to carry out the tests and inoculation. Messrs Laurenson and Williams were appointed the visiting committee for October.
