RANGITIKEI.

MARTON, Sept. 26. The annual daffodil and spring flower show, promoted by St. Stephen’s Church, Marten, was held this week. The show was formally opened by Mr F. W. Gilligan, headmaster of the Wanganui Collegiate School, and the judge was Mr A. J. Shailer, of Palmerston North. In the evening items were contributed by the Marton Municipal Band and 'the Marton Junction Womens Institute drama circle. The following were the principal awards: —Silver cup for most points in amateur classes: G. Larsen, 58 points. Challenge cup. points prize in amateur classes, for growers in Rangitikci County : Mrs A. A. Williams, 9 points. Champion bloom in amateur classes: G. Laisen. Silver cup donated by Mr Larsen, for most points in amateur sub-section : Mrs Meyrick, 17 points. Champion trumpets: G. Larsen’s “Sincerity.” Champion other than trumpet: G. Larsen’s “Aranjuez,” which was also the champion bloom of the show. Points prize, amateur decorative suction: Miss Diana Smith, 11 points. Upper novice section: Rev. W. Raine. Children’s classes (13 and over): Joyce Thompson, 6 points. Miscellaneous section: Mrs A. A. Wiilians, 10 points. Children’s class (under 13): - Rosalind Bcnseman, 5 points, in the open classes, A. Gibson was prominent, while in the amateur sections, G. Larsen, Mrs Meyrick, and J. C. Glover were the principal prizewinners, Mr Larsen gaining 21 firsts and five second placings. Mrs J. Aitchison and Mrs Meyrick were the principal prize-winners in the amateur sub-sections.

At the annual meeting of the Old Boys Cricket Club, the election of officers resulted: —President. Mr C. S. Beechey; vice-presidents, Messrs G. Meredith, R. C. Ball, J. Clarke, A. Way, L. Mcßeth; club captain, Mr Wysocki, vice-captain, Mr I. 11. Jolly; secretary and treasurer, Mr J. Duncan; committee, Messrs N. Y. Rix-Trott, A. Duncan and D. Comrie; selectors, captain and vice-captain. It was decided to enter for the Manley Cup and Arkwright Shield competitions. Four new members were nominated.

The Mayor (Mr F. Purnell) presided at a meeting of the Marton Borough Council on Wednesday evening. A request to install a light od the north end of Hair Street was referred to the Works Committee. Tho district engineer of the Railways Department advised that the department had completed arrangements under the Public Works Act to have tho road reserve adjoining the Golding’s Lino crossing, proclaimed as railway land. This road would be closed for traffic from October 14. The Under-Secretary of Internal Affairs advised that, in view of the balance in the Mayor’s Fund at March 31 last amounting to £lO5, further grants from art unions would be discontinued until funds wore required. During August, and September the Navy League (Rangitikei branch) lias sent from Marton to Navy League headquarters in Wellington the following knitted garments: 37 pullovers. 2 cardigans, 53 scarves, 9 pairs socks, 6 pairs wristlets, 10 pairs gloves, 21 pairs mittens, and 115 balaclavas. At a meeting of the Marton branch of the Wanganui Primary Production Council Mr G. L. Marshall presided. Regarding tho request to the National Council of Primary Production to have a district . formed at Marton, a reply was received ..stating that the matter had been discussed, hut conflicting reports had been made regarding the feelings of the Production Committee, and consequently tho matter had been deferred for further investigation. . The Director of Primary Production expressed his gratification of the splendid response from tho farmers of the Rangitikei district in increased production. It was decided to mako a request to the Minister of Man Power that a farmer be appointed to the manpower committees in the rural districts who would vbu able to watch the interests of the farmer. It was stated that several youths from farms were being accepted for military service when they could not be afforded by the employer. The following replies to remits forwarded to tho National Council for consideration were received:— In regard to the health classification for men sent out on farm schemes, the Labour Department advised that if specific complaints arc made-regarding the unfitness of men being sent out, they would be pleased

to look into such cases. Concerning a suggestion that the Shearers’ Union rules be waived where such action would promote the more’ expeditious shearing of sheep in wartime, it was stated that the hours of work for shearers had been extended and it was felt that the award was elastic enough to meet most circumstances. Some of the latest steps to organise labour for farm production in the light of the depletion of man-power for military service were outlined in a circular letter from the Director of Primary Production (Mr R. B. Tennent). The placement officer (Mr ,T. L. C. Merton) outlined methods adopted to assist farmers in this district in obtaining labour.
