BOWLING

MANAWATU CENTRE. ANNUAL MEETING. There were only three clubs in the Manawatu Bowling Centre not represented at the annual' meeting, which was held in Palmerston North yesterday. The clubs were all outlying ones —Levin Central, Levin and Dannevirke. The . chair was occupied by the president, Mr J. A. Nash. On the motion of the president, it was decided to send a letter to Mr J. H. Mason, a member of the Oroua Club, expressing sympathy in the loss he and Mrs Mason suffered recently in the accidental death at Blenheim of their son, who was a trainee in the lioval New Zealand Air Force. The Taranaki Bowling Centre wrote thanking the centre, on behalf of the West End Club, for the hospitality extended their teams at the Easter tournament, and also to the ladies accompanying them. A similar letter was received from the Kia Toa Club (Hastings). Mr A. Andrews, the centre’s bowl tester, advised that he wished to remove the testing material from the Terrace End Club to the Northern Club. This was agreed to by the meeting, delegates from each club affected assenting to the change. When speaking to the report already published, the chairman said the balance-sheet showed that the New Year and Easter tournaments had been successful both socially and financially. The centre had a credit balance of £147 3s 2d. against which was the liability of the honorarium to the secretary. The bad weather had prevented the pennants games from being a success last season. The speaker reviewed the visits to other centres, and said that these visits could be continued this season if the players desired. Mr Nash also traced the representations made to the New Zealand Bowling Council that there should be a representative of each centre on the council. These representations, expressed in a remit, were not adopted at the meeting of the New Zealand Bowling Association. Mr Nash moved that the report be adopted and the motion was seconded by Mr 11. Bly and carried. Mr H. P. Horne (the retiring patron) commented that the balance-sheet was very satisfactory. OFFICERS ELECTED.

The following officers were elected for the ensifing year:—Patron, Mr J. Bartholomew; president, Mr J. A. Nash; vice-presidents, Messrs Wenham (Levin), C. Hausmann (Oroua), and E. Bary (Palmerston North) ; lion, auditor. Mr K. W. Eglinton; executive, Messrs T. L. Arnott (Palmerston North), E. H'. Smith (Takaro), E. D. Wycherley (Hokowhitu), G. ('orb ridge (Manawatu), K. McDonald (Northern) and J. J. O’Shea (Terrace End). The retiring patron, Mr Horne, was the mover for the appointment of Mr Bartholomew as patron. He also proposed Mr Nash’s re-election to the presidency, eulogising the interest the latter had taken in bowling through his many years of association with the sport. On the motion of the president, it was decided to hold the New Tear pairs, Plaster fours and veterans' tournaments. For the Easter tournament, six wins arc again to qualify entrants for participation in post-section play, the same as last year. The entrance fees were fixed at 10s for the pairs and 12s 6d for the fours. Afternoon tea and other refreshments are to be provided as was the case last year. The entrance fee for the veterans’ i tournament is to be 2s 6d, with morn- . ing and afternoon teas free. j Referring again to the representa-. tion on the Dominion council, the pre- 1 sident said he thought it would be difficult to secure success. Mr G. H. Hodd moved, and Mr J. J. O’Shea seconded a motion that the representations be i continued. Mr O’Shea said the position of the country clubs had been. very well put forward by Mr Nash, j Dr Austin (Cromwell) and Mr C. H. Clinkard (Wanganui). Mr O’Shea thought that until the council was formed on the same lines as the New Zealand Rugby Union’s Council, there would be trouble. Mr Arnott said there were 5509 players who were not represented on the council. The Auckland and Wellington centres had 149 votes and the minor associations 259. If the minor centres held together they would secure Iheir wishes. Mr Bary suggested that a questionnaire be sent out to every centre to ascertain if all wished to press the matter, replies to be requested. The motion was carried and Mr Bary’s suggestion adopted also. There was a discussion as to whether the pennants competitions should be played this season. Mr Bary suggested that the A and B divisions be eliminated and that a system used in Taranaki be adopted, under which one competition is played and ballots are held to select the representatives of the larger clubs, to make the playing strengths equal to the smaller clubs’. Mr Bary moved. that the Taranaki scheme be adopted, Mr Hausmann moving an amendment that an outline of the Taranaki scheme be distributed to the clubs for an expression of opinion. The motion was withdrawn and the amendment, seconded by Mr Arnott, was adopted. The official opening for the centre, was fixed to take place at the Terrace End Club. , „ r On behalf of the Northern Club, Air McDonald moved a remit: “That the champion of champion fours, competition be comprised of a representative four from each club who shall play according to their club classification, i.e., each representative team to have a recognised or classified No. 1,2, 3 and skip.” Mr J. H. Nash, for the Eketahuna Club, in seconding the motion pro forma, said that it would not be workable bv the smaller country clubs. Mr Hodd said that the Pahiatua Club had tried classification in one season, but it had not been successful. Several other speakers representing the smaller country clubs spoke against the remit, which was lost. Mr A. F. Wimsett was reappointed secretary. Letters of thanks are to be forwarded to Messrs J. M. Gordon, S. I. McKenzie and K. W. Eglinton for services rendered. A vote of thanks was also accorded the outgoing officers and chairman.
