ENEMY LOSSES

IN FIERCE BARRAGE. LONDON "HITS BACK. (United Press Association —Copyright.) (British Official Wireless;) (Ilec. 1.15 p.m.) RUGBY, Sept. 26. The Air Ministry announced tonight that at least 31 enemy planes were destroyed in the raids on Britain to-day, including at least 16 bombers. Eight of our fighters are missing, but the pilots of, three are safe. The majority of the German machines were destroyed in a half-hour’s battle off the Isle of Wight. The German raids on London commenced about the usual hour to night. A number of bombs were dropped, but a fierce barrage prevented many of the machines reaching the Central London area. The Inner Temple area, which has been bombed, is the ancient settlement which inspired the plan of the famous Karl Marx Hoff in Vienna, an outstanding example of community sev*9ment. Perhaps this is the reasqn Uie Nazis included the Temple in their programme of London’s “military objectives.” FIRES ON FRENCH COAST. ENEMY GUNS HAMMERED. (British Official Wireless.) (Rec. 1-15 p.m.) • RUGBY, Sept. 26. Dover observers report that to-night the R.A.F. is again conducting a vigorous bombardment of the Germanoccupied Channel ports. Large fires are burning all along the French coast. Observers believe the German gun emplacements at Cape Gris Nez are receiving particular attention. These guns shelled the Dover area for one hour this afternoon, two unoccupied cottages being destroyed. Two casualties resulted from a shell burst.
