WANGANUI CLUB’S RACES.

SUCCESSFUL OPENING. DUNCANNON WINS SPRINT. The Wanganui Jockey Club's spring meeting had a successful opening at Awapunt yesterday. The weather was inclement in the morning but improved considerably, with the result that the attendance increased later in tho day. Speculation was exceediiijgly brisk, alid tho club had a gratifying increase in its tolalisator turnover. The amount handled was £18,281 10s, an ilicronse of £7145 on the total of £11,135 10s handled for the corresponding day of the spring meeting at Wanganui last year. In tho main event, the Marangai Handicap, Areas, eighth favourite in a field of nine, won comfortably and tiaid a dividend approaching a score. The favourite, Royal Star 11, was prominent until ho failed over the concluding two furlongs, thus breaking a good winning sequence. Another runaway victory was secured by Rakanui in the Scafield Hack Handicap. Rakanui lost his rider and left the starting point, before the start of the race, and a considerable delay resulted until ho Was caught by tho elefk of the course and taken hack to the start. He then went away to will in a hollow fashion by eight lengths. Duncannon took the concluding event, the Flying Handicap, in good Style, winning in u, determined maimer from the •favourite, Screen Star. The distance hack event went to Hasten, a Masterton horse W'ho has been racing well of late. The arrangements for the meeting were carried out very capably. The fixture will conclude 10-tnorrow, when tho main attractions will bo the Wanganui Guineas for three-year-olds and the Debutant Stakes for two-year-olds, some of the entrants for the latter taking part in a juvenile parade before racing started yesterday. With these attractions the club should again experience another successful day. After the seventh race, the Putiki Handicap, an inquiry w'as held into tho running of the favourite, Kilometre. The evidence disclosed. that the connections of the liorso had genuinely backed him, but he got a bad passage and was unable to do better than fourth. The explanation was accepted. SCANDAL RESISTS CHALLENGE. Scandal scored an end to end victory in tho„ Durie Hack Handicap. He had to moot a challenge from the favourite, Lucullus Boy, but withstood this to win by half a length. Scandal started well from No. 1 barrier position and led on the rails, with Lucullus Bov and Beau Courcur on the outside. Kentucky, Harina and Waimutu were next. This order was maintained until the' straight was reached and Scandal went on to win from Lucullus Boy, and Kentucky was third, ahead of Harina. ARCAS SPRINGS SURPRISE. An outsider Areas scored a comfortable victory in tho open distance event, the Maraiigi Handicap, in which the favourite, Royal Star 11, failed after being well placed for most cf the race. Royal Star II started boat but Areas ran to tho front after the first furlong and maintained that position. Royal Star II followed, leading tlio others. With & quarter of a mile to go Colonel Bogey came through on the rails to be with the leaders, and Dainty Sheila was tdso handy Areas went on in the lead turning into the straight with Royni Star II falling back. Areas won by three lcnglhs from Colonel Bogey, who was well clear of the third horse, Little Robin. Skyway and Siegmund did the host oi the others. EASY WIN FOR RAKANUI.

Rakanui scored the easiest win of the day in the Putiki Hack Handicap. Before tho race ho caused considerable delay by breaking away and losing bis rider Ouvanoy. However, lie was Caught and started, leading from beginning to end Rukunui was followed the early stages by Moradnbad. Kotua, Tolagn, To Ure and Curtail. As the straight was ’ reached Rakanui was increasing his h-fftl, und bo wns eight lengths ahead at l,|ie post, the next horse being Tolaga, an outside fancy, who paid double figures for second, although a wi/mcf at Now Plymouth last week. Tolaga unproved Ins position from about sixth at the turn and boat the favourite Kotua by a bead for tho socond place. Tulcnfca was fourth. HASTEN’S CONSISTENCY.

Hasten won the distance hade event after running ft good rucu. lie hud to assert his superiority in the straight and kept his lead from Pearl of Asia till past the post. Hasten ran some good races at the recent Riefcurton meeting. Pearl of Asia led early from Arabic, Hasten, Charles Edward, and Dynasty

Pearl of Asia held Charles Edward off by halt a length for second place, and tho favourite Kilometre finished fourth. DUNGANNON’S LATE RUN. Tho concluding event, the open sprint, Was won by Duncannon in good style with a late run which took him to the front in tho last furlong. Ho obtained a narrow decision from tho favourite, Screen Star. . ... i After a furlong Sporting Gift wont to the front, and Sorcen Star wus next. Sporting Gift held on till the _ straight was reached, when Mittio had improved her position to bo second, followed by Night Eruption and Screen Star. Duneatmon was behind thorn, but found an opening half-way down the straight and went through for a good win. The second horse, -Screen Star, was a length ahead of Night Eruption, with Mittie fourth.
