BOXING.

HUTCHINSON IMPRESSES,

Johnny Hutchinson, of America, who lights Vic Caltaux, holder of the New Zealand welter v> eight title, in a 12round contest at the Palmerston North Opera House on Saturday night, had a three-round work-out last evening with j. Sharpe, of Ohakea, who meets C. Raynor in Wellington on Saturday night. The work-out, at the Palmerston gymnasium, war witnessed by some 300 spectators, who must have been very much impressed with the American’s ability as a boxer and as a fighter and puncher. If the spectators had any doubts about the quality of Hutchinson’s defence and the weight he was putting behind his punches, a Reference to Sharpe .—no mean puncher himself —would quickly set their minds at rest. Caltaux has earned a reputation as a “king hitter” and as an aggressive and' tireless fighter Once the gong has started for Saturday s fight he will not have far to (ravel before he finds Hutchinson. Last night the American revealed himself as a powerful two-fisted puncher, quick on his feet and always in position to hit. Mis balance for lightning thrusts and hooks was perfect and everything lie rent over had weight behind it. If Caltaux desires to “mix it” on Saturday night his wish will he gratified, and the Manawatu Boxing. Association is to be congratulated on having matched these men. On and from every other angle, it looks to be the fight of the year, and on Saturday night it will be surprising if late-eomers who have not booked a seat find even standing room. At the conclusion of the sparring match last night Mr R. R. Morton thanked Sharpe for having afforded boxing enthusiasts the chance of seeing Hutchinson in action.
