INCREASED PRODUCTION
ASSISTANCE FOR BRITAIN
While stating that there was every need tor increased production in New Zealand, Mr J. R. Lloyd Hammond, group representative of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, told members of the Manawatu provincial executive of the union, at its meeting yesterday, that it should be made plain that Britain had never asked for any specific quantities by which New Zealand farmers should increase their produce. Dealing with a suggestion about increasing the weight of lambs, Mr Hammond said that this was absolutely wrong. If this were done, the freezing works would not be able to deal with the position. It had never yet been stated that increased production of meat had been asked for by the British Government. New Zealand should produce all she could to help the war effort and the British Government, but the latter Government had not asked for any specific quantity. No specific increase of 10,000 tons of bacon had been asked for by Britain, proceeded Mr Hammond. Britain would take all the bacon that could be produced, but the figure of 10,000 tons had been supplied in New Zealand, and not by Britain. It was New Zealand’s bounden duty to supply all she could. The British Government did not ask ; for specific quantities of eggs, Mr Hammond continued. England would I be short of eggs because she was now lent off from the countries from which 6ho used to import them. Negotiations I were taking place only now for the !purchase of eggs from New Zealand. All these forms of produce would be needed, Mr Hammond said, but they would be needed at the right place and time, and so that they could be handled. Increased production had to be carried out in the proper manner. When an appeal was made to the farmer for a patriotic cause there was nothing he would not do. Mr Hammond said that he did not want the impression to be given that increasing production was wrong. It should be done, even if only as an insurance that Britain would not be short of sup- | plies.
