Entering Wellington Heads from Auckland on the night of August 25, 1913, the Devon ran into a rain squall and went aground, tearing a hole in her plates below the engine-room. In the past fortnight £9OOO has been given in donations. Export of Trout Eggs. A remarkably good season for the collection of trout eggs for export and rearing purposes is reported by the State hatchery at Turangi on the banks of the famous fishing river Tongariro. The Minister of Internal Affairs stated that up to August 20 7,404,000 eggs had been collected. That number was 1,876,000 over the total number secured in the 1939 season.

Hamilton Anniversary. The 76th anniversary of the foundation of Hamilton fell on Saturday. Hamilton was founded by the members of the Fourth Waikato Regiment, who were recruited in Sydney during the Maori War by Captain William Steele as a body of militia, and who landed at Hamilton on August 24, 1864. The locality was then known as Kirikiriroa, and was renamed after Captain J, F. C. Hamilton, of H.M.S. Esk, who was killed at Gate Pa, Tauranga.
