RUGBY FOOTBALL

FINAL OF CHAMPIONSHIP. Old Boys and United will meet in the final of the Manawatu Rugby Union’s senior championship at the Showgrounds to-morrow, and the indications are that a fine display will be given. Mr W. C. Ilannan presided at a meeting of the Horowhenua Rugby Union. J. Jillelt, who was ordered off the held during the match between Wanderers and Athletic, was suspended until September 30, 1941. The Athletic Club wrote protesting against the win of Wanderers seniors last Saturday on the ground that the latter team included two players who had not fulfilled tho residential qualification of 14 days. There was some doubt as to the ground of the protest being correct, with the result that decision was deferred pending proof. A letter was received from the Cenlurians’ Club (Wellington) suggesting a game with Horowhenua. The committee was of tho opinion that it was too late in tho season to arrange a hx-

ture. RUGBY IN SCHOOLS. ENTHUSIASM MAINTAINED. WELLINGTON, Aug. 23. . The enthusiasm with which Rugby is conducted in the primary schools of tho North Island was shown at the annual meeting of delegates held at the close of the quadrangular tournament in Wellington. Seventeen teachers, representing Taranaki, Wanganui, Manawatu, Horowhenua, Wairarapa, Hutt Valley and AVellington, met to discuss primary school Rugby, and a communication was also received from ltangitikei. At present Taranaki, Horowhenua, Rangitikei, and Hutt Valley combine to form one tournament, and Wanganui, Wairarapa, Manawatu and Wellington make up the other. Discussion centred in a proposal to regroup tho districts concerned, but most of the delegates felt there was nothing to be gained by altering the status quo at this time. A motion was passed pledging the schools’ unions concerned to endeavour not only to continue Rugby in the schools as usual, but also to carry on the tournament as at present constituted. It could be gathered that interest in the game is as keen as ever, and the lie was given to the opinion apparently held in some quarters that primary school Rugby has deteriorated. This year, while some unions have received ample financial support from the parent bodies, others have received little or no assistance in running tournaments. It was decided to appoint a representative sub-committee to wait on the executive of the New Zealand Rugby Union to acquaint that body | with the work being done, and also to request a continuance and, if possible, a general increase in the grant made for school football.
