EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.’* AUGUST 14. 1910. Auckland, holders of the Ranfurly Shield, had beaten Hawke’s Bay in a challenge match by 11 points to 3. Janies Mitchell (challenger) had knocked out Pictou (holder) in the fifth round of a boxing match for the New Zealand heavyweight championship. The death had occurred of Miss Florence Nightingale, stated a cablegram from London. She was born in 1820. Much interest was being taken in the sculling match for the world’s championship between Arnst and Barry, to be held on the Zambesi River on August 18. Both were confident of victory. A Paris cablegram staled that there were 800 ’planes built in France last year at a cost of £400,000.
